About Dr. Michael A. Marinelli

Dr. Michael A. Marinelli, Ed.D, ’76, was named the 10th Headmaster of Archmere Academy, his alma mater, on July 1, 2010. An accomplished leader in Catholic education, he is the school’s first lay Headmaster.

Before coming back to Archmere, Dr. Marinelli served as the first lay Headmaster of Saint Edmond’s Academy in Wilmington, Delaware from 2003 to 2009. He had served as the school’s Associate Headmaster since 1998.

Between 1996 and 1998, Dr. Marinelli was Associate Director of the Delaware Art Museum, after working at Archmere since 1984 as Director of Development and Public Relations.

Dr. Marinelli attended Franklin & Marshall College and the University of Delaware to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in 1980. After graduating, he joined Bank of Delaware where he worked in the areas of precious metals management and corporate marketing. Dr. Marinelli received his MBA from Widener University in 1984.

While working as Archmere’s Director of Development and Public Relations between 1984 and 1996, Dr. Marinelli completed the curriculum of the National Planned Giving Institute at the College of William & Mary. He earned the professional certification of Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) from the Association of Fund Raising Professionals, and in 1996, he was named Fund Raising Executive of the Year by the Chapter. Dr. Marinelli also taught business and economics courses at Archmere.

In 2001, Dr. Marinelli completed a Doctor of Education degree from Wilmington University. His dissertation focused on the evolution of leadership in Catholic schools sponsored by religious communities in the United States.

Since 2007, Dr. Marinelli has been an Adjunct Professor at the University of Delaware, where he teaches the Music Management course “Patterns of Patronage.”

Dr. Marinelli has spoken at national conferences and facilitated workshops for boards of schools and non-profit, educational professionals. He also serves on the Awards Selection Committee of the Delaware Superstars in Education Program run by the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Marinelli continues to study curriculum development and learning strategies. In 2009 and 2010, he completed Harvard’s Graduate School of Education summer institutes.

At age 15, Dr. Marinelli began playing church organ – an avocation he continues as the Director of Liturgy and Music at Saint Joseph on the Brandywine Church in Greenville, Delaware. He began piano study at age 6, and he has played for a number of theatrical groups and musical ensembles over the years, including several student musical productions at Archmere Academy. Currently, Dr. Marinelli is a member of Archmere’s liturgical music ensemble, which he established at the start of his first school year as Headmaster.

Since his installation in 2010, Dr. Marinelli has worked with Archmere’s board and administration to implement several successful initiatives such as the 2012 Strategic Plan, which outlines objectives and goals within five key areas of the school.

Dr. Marinelli emphasizes Archmere’s unique Norbertine mission and heritage in all aspects of the school community, leading by example and creating an invigorating Archmere experience for students, parents, alumni, teachers and staff.
