Winter Sports Preview Women’s and Men’s Basketball

The regular season for winter sports starts this week with both Women’s and Men’s Basketball starting things off on Friday.  There are a number of new/old faces in these programs so lets meet the coaches and players who should make this a Great Winter Season.

In the Women’s Program new coach Chris Zambito, takes over the Varsity Program.  Chris, takes over a team that was 7-13 last season. He was an assistant coach during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.  He is also the father of Michelle ’11 who was a three year varsity player during her time at Archmere. Chris will be assisted by former University of Delaware stand out Kayla Miller as varsity assistant. The JV will be coached by newcomers Larry Kelly and assistant Emily Barefoot.

The girls will be a mix of experience and youth, with the goal of winning the Diamond State Conference and returning to the State Tournament after missing out last season. The team will be lead by returning All Conference Players Seniors, Kate Payne and Amanda Olsen with fellow seniors Natalie Mason, Anna D’Eramo, and Rebecca Peet.  All the returning Juniors, Kassidy McVey, Emily Dentinger and Audra Woodside all saw varsity minutes as 10th graders.  They will be joined by a talented Freshman class that sees four players on the Varsity Roster, Danazia Brown, Camryn Howath, Elise Bastian and Cecilla Irvine.

The Women’s Season starts on Friday Night December 6th at Delmarva Christian with the JV game beginning at 5:45 and the Varsity to follow.

On the Men’s side Rick Nelms ’70 takes over a team which finished 8-12 last year. Rick has a wealth of coaching experience having won Conference Titles at Pennsylvania Schools Coatsville, Jenkintown and Kennett.  He also won a Pennsylvania State Championship at Kennett. Also, on the the Men’s Staff is Rich Bastian ’82 as a volunteer assistant for the Varsity Team. The JV will once again be coached by William Gabriel, Archmere’s Campus Minister and his assistant will be Ethan Levine a member of the Math Department.

The team is senior laden lead by returning First Team All Conference player Tyler Burns and Second Team All Conference Conor Furey. The remaining  seniors are Brian Canfield, Christian Conaty, Sean Deely, Mike Ford and Brian Rodgers.  Brian will miss the early part of the season following thumb surgery from an injury during football season. They are joined by Juniors De’Joun Lee who saw varsity time as a sophomore and transfer Peyton Heck. Sophomores Rob Baxter, Nick Udovich, and John Vaile will add bench strength to Coach Nelms fast paced game. The team has set the lofty goal of not only winning the Conference, but making it to the Final Four of the State Tournament.

The Men also open against Delmarva Christian. They will be at home in the Moglia Field House for a JV game starting at 5:00 with the Varsity to follow.
