Closing Out The Season With Some College News

The success and excitement of our Fall sports continued last week for our Auks with two college signings!

Senior Shannon Hogue made history on Wednesday, November 12, when she was the first Archmere student or graduate to sign a letter of intent to pursue collegiate Equestrian. Shannon will be a member of the Baylor University Equestrian team next fall.

Shannon has competed successfully in the junior hunters and big equitation divisions for several years. She placed third overall at the National Junior Hunter Championships East Coast 2014 and she qualified for The ASPCA Maclay Regionals and the USEF Pessoa Hunt Seat Medal Finals in 2014.  Since 2004, Shannon has trained with John Muldoon, owner operator of Reinbow’s End Farm in Malvern, PA. She has also received additional training assistance from Brian Feigus and Nanci Urban of Nevergreen Farm in Farmingdale, NJ.  As the next step in her education and training, Baylor is lucky to have her!

On the same day, senior Colleen Carney signed her letter of intent to join the University of Richmond’s cross country team, just days after being named DIAA Division II State Champion.

At the DIAA Cross Country State Championship Meet on Saturday, November 8th, Colleen earned first place with a time of 19:18 on the White Clay Creek 5K course. A member of the varsity cross country and outdoor track teams for the Auks since sophomore year, Colleen has received All-Conference and All-State recognition in every season. She was named to second team All-State cross country her junior year and first team All-State during her senior season. She was named All-County sophomore, junior, and senior year for cross country.  In track, she received All-County and All-State recognition during her junior season and was named a State Champion for the 1600m. She was also named team MVP during her sophomore and junior years.  We can’t wait to see what she will accomplish at the University of Richmond!

Winter Sports Preview Continued Wrestling, Men’s and Women’s Swimming

While only having two seniors, Nick Benozich and Femi Verissimo, the Wrestling team is deep in experience. Returning juniors, Adam Collins, Sean Devine, Justin Freck, and Mike Pinto, along with returning Sophomores Matt McCurnin and Jake Mattola all had multiple varsity matches last season.

Joining Coach Dan Lutz’s  program are newcomers Juniors Vinnie Manetti and Jack DeAnastasis who will add depth at the higher weight classes, join new Sophomore Alec Giakas and Freshman Joe Bolner and Anthony Tursello.

Joining Coach Lutz are Matt Burns ’03 and Nick Mattola, father of Jake ’16 on the coaching staff.  The staff hopes to have  between 4 and 8 team members could qualify for the individual state championships in February.

Coaches Steph Gant and John Chew are looking for a top three finish from the Men’s Swim team this winter.  Lead by Senior, Nationally Ranked, Three Time All-State and Division 1 (North Carolina) signee Ben Creekmore the swim Auks have a very experienced team with fellow seniors Charles Collins, Chris Curcio, and Ken D’Aurizio all having qualified for the State Meet last year. They are joined by Juniors Eric Campbell, Tom Diamanty, Tom Hamilton, Cory Manley, and Nick Xiao and Sophomores Caleb Beard, Dylan Dramis, Alec Giakas and Peter Sabini, returning from a team that finished in the top 10 at the state meet last year.

The coaches are also looking for a top five finish from the Women’s Swim team.  The team is one of the deepest in resent years lead by Senior and returning State Qualifier Laura Jogani, and fellow senior Maryanna Lynch.  The strong junior class includes Alana Bradley, Colleen Carney, Maddie Love, Kelly Lucey, Savannah Quinn and Reylin Xu. Returning Sophomores Anna Baxter, Lillian Coogan, Elise Jogani, Kylie Lavelle, Sara Linton, Claire Mooseberg, Taylor Tucker and Lauren Yoslov are joined by transfer Grace Anzilotti. The Freshman class added even more depth with Carla Anderson, Hanna Boles, Peyton Bowlsbey, Catherine Falkenstein, Lillian Quinn, Grace Savon and Gabriella Stockett.



Archmere Athletes Sign Letters Of Intent to Play Division I Sports

Four Archmere students signed letters of intent last week to play Division I sports:

  • Ben Creekmore ’14 signed to swim for University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A four-year member of the Archmere swim team, Ben has set school records in 200 yard freestyle, 500 yard freestyle, 100 yard backstroke, and 100 yard butterfly. He is also a member of the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America team.
  • Sean Deely ’14 signed to play baseball for the University of Delaware. Sean earned All-State Honors in two positions, First Team as a pitcher and Honorable Mention at first base. He has also earned All-Conference Honors as both a sophomore and junior.
  • Katelyn Payne ’14 signed to play lacrosse at Saint Joseph’s University. She is a multi-sport athlete who has earned All-State Honors in lacrosse along with All-Conference Honors in both cross country and basketball.
  • Claire Orzel ’14 signed to row at Boston College. Claire played volleyball from freshman through junior year before focusing on crew full-time.
