Auks move into Christmas Break after a Special Week!

The final week before Christmas Break was special for the Auks, with something happening for the First time of Archmere Athletics! For the first time in school history both the Men and Women’s Basketball Teams were ranked in the Wilmington News Journal rankings at the same time. In the weekly rankings released on 12/17 the Men came in at #7 and the Women at #10!

The Women’s Basketball Team proved worthy of their ranking by recording wins over conference rival Delaware Military Academy 40-35 on Tuesday 12/17.  The Lady Auks were lead by Seniors Amanda Olsen’s 18 and Kate Payne’s 13 in the win.  The pair of Seniors again lead the team to an upset win over the #5 ranked team from St. Mark’s, on Thursday 12/19.  Olsen had 14 and Payne 10 points in the Lady Auks first win over the Spartans’ since 1992 and the first win at the Moglia Field House over St. Marks’ since 1987! The team 4-0 will take on Academy Park (PA) in the first round of the Garnet Valley (PA) Holiday Classic on Friday 12/27 at 1:30 pm.

The Men’s Hoops Team also showed why they were ranked by gaining two wins.  The first came against Conrad on Tuesday 12/17.  Archmere lead by Tyler Burns ’14 scoring 23 and Yale Football signee Conor Furey ’14 added 12 to the 67-19 win.  On Thursday 12/19 the Auks traveled to St. Mark’s to take on the always tough Spartans’ while they never trailed the Auks returned to Claymont with a hard fought 44-39 win, for the third game in a row, Senior Tyler Burns lead the Auks in scoring with 13 along with De’Juan Lee who also added 13.  The 5-0 Auks will be back in action on 12/27 at the Garnet Valley Holiday Classic vs Sun Valley (PA), at 6:30.

The Swim Teams opened their duel meet season this week with the Men and Women both traveling to St. Andrews on Tuesday 12/27 and picking up their first wins of the season.  The Women’s Swim Team entered the meet ranked #3 in the pre-season Wilmington News Journal rankings and won the meet 91-78.  The team swept the relays and got multiple first place finishes from Senior Laura Jogani, Sophomore Ellie Jogani and Freshman Lillian Quinn.  The Men’s Team  recorded wins in the 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle Relays along with multiple wins by Ben Creekmore ’14 and Corey Manley ’15 in a 91-78 victory. On Thursday, 12/19 the Swim Auks traveled down Naamans Road to take on  Concord.  The #3 Women’s Team  again behind multiple wins by Ellie Jogani ’16 in the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Backstroke and sister Laura Jorgani ’14 in the 50 and 100 Freestyle and wins in the 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle Relays for a 51.5-42.5 Auks win.  The Men suffered their first loss of the season 58-35.  Once again Senior and North Carolina signee Ben Creekmore recorded wins in the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Butterfly.  Both teams return to action after break on January 7, 2014 vs Wilmington Friends. The Women’s Team enters break with a 2-0 record while the Men’s Team stands at 1-1

The Wrestling Team lost their first duel meet of the season to Conrad 39-30 in the home opener on 12/18. Win were recorded by 160 pounder Adam Collins ’15 and 126 pounder Mike Pinto ’15 by decision. Sophomores Matt McCurnin at 113 pounds, Jake Mottola at 132 pounds and Junior Sean Devine at 182 all won by pins.  The team will be in the Howdy Duncan Invitational on Friday 12/20 and Saturday 12/21 held at William Penn High School then will not return to mat until January 3-4, 2014 at the Delcastle Invitational. The Auks Wrestlers have a 1-1 record in duel meets going into the Christmas Holiday’s.

Wrestling finishes 5th at YellowJacket Invitational, Men’s Hoop moves to 3-0

The Wrestling Team had it’s best showing of the year on Saturday, 12/14 at the YellowJacket Invitational.  The Auks placed 5th in the 16 team tournament. They also had six medalist, with Matt McCurnin’16 taking 1st at 106 pounds.  Sophomore Jake Mattola at 132 pounds and Adam Collins at 160 took home 2nd place medals. Two Juniors Mike Pinto at 126 and Sean Devine at 182 and Sophomore Alec Giakas at 190 took home bronze.  The team returns to duel meet action on Wednesday 12/18 vs. Conrad at home 4:00 start. The Auks will also take part in the William Penn Invitational on Friday and Saturday 12/20-21.  Wrestling starts at 5:00 on Friday and 9:00 on Saturday.

Men’s Basketball moved to 3-0 on the season with a 62-54 win over Wilmington Friends on Saturday 12/14. The hoopster were lead by Seniors Tyler Burns and Conor Furey  who both scored 19 points. Fellow Senior Christian Conaty added 13 for the Auks.  The JV team also moved to 3-0 with a 49-30 win over Friends.  Both teams return to action on Tuesday 12/17 at home vs. Conrad at 5:00.  They then travel to St. Mark’s on Thursday 12/19 for a 6:00 start.

Other action this week sees the Women’s and Men’s Swim Teams open their season at St. Andrew’s on Tuesday 12/17 beginning at 4:00.  Women’s Basketball travels to Delaware Military Academy on Tuesday 12/17 with the JV starting at 4:45 and the Varsity to follow.  They return home on Thursday 12/20 against St. Mark’s, JV at 6 with the Varsity to follow.  The Indoor Track Team will travel to the Kutztown Classic on Friday 12/20, first race starts at 3:00.

Auks Have a Big Thursday!

Snow canceled school on Monday and Tuesday 12/9- 10 which means teams had a couple of days without practice.  That didn’t seem to slow down the Auks as teams came out ready to roll after getting just one practice day.

The highlight of the Big Thursday was Men’s Basketball Coach Nelms ’70 fast paced team took on #3 ranked St. Andrew’s School in their first away contest of the season.  Lead by Conor Furey ’14 22 points the Auks never trailed posting a 52-45 win. Fellow Senior Tyler Burns added 13 for the Auks who are now 2-0 on the season.  The JV team also posted a 29-26 victory to go 2-0.  Both teams next game is at Wilmington Friends on Saturday 12/14 beginning at noon.

Women’s Basketball played their first game at the Mogila Field House for the 2013-14 season and came away with a 62-43 win over William Penn.  Like the men, they never trailed pulling out to a 26-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. The Auks were lead by Amanda Olsen ’14 and Audra Woodside ’15 who scored 13 points each.  The JV team also posted a 41-24 win.  The teams, both 2-0 for the season,  return to game action on Tuesday, December 17 at Delaware Military Academy with a 4:45 tip-off.

Wrestling started their duel meet season with a 42-33 win over Tower Hill at Tower Hill.  The Auks recorded pins from Matt McCurnin ’16 at 113 pounds, Fermi Verissimo ’14 at 152 pounds, Adam Collins ’15 at 160 and Alec Giakis ’16 at 195 pounds.  The team returns to the mat on Saturday 12/14 at the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Newark High School beginning at 9:00.  The home opener is Wednesday 12/18 in the Moglia Field House vs Conrad High School starting at 4:00.

While swimming has not started their season the Women’s Swim Team are ranked #3 in the preseason rankings in the Wilmington News Journal.

Archmere Athletes Sign Letters Of Intent to Play Division I Sports

Four Archmere students signed letters of intent last week to play Division I sports:

  • Ben Creekmore ’14 signed to swim for University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A four-year member of the Archmere swim team, Ben has set school records in 200 yard freestyle, 500 yard freestyle, 100 yard backstroke, and 100 yard butterfly. He is also a member of the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America team.
  • Sean Deely ’14 signed to play baseball for the University of Delaware. Sean earned All-State Honors in two positions, First Team as a pitcher and Honorable Mention at first base. He has also earned All-Conference Honors as both a sophomore and junior.
  • Katelyn Payne ’14 signed to play lacrosse at Saint Joseph’s University. She is a multi-sport athlete who has earned All-State Honors in lacrosse along with All-Conference Honors in both cross country and basketball.
  • Claire Orzel ’14 signed to row at Boston College. Claire played volleyball from freshman through junior year before focusing on crew full-time.
