On June 29, 1932, Abbot Bernard Pennings, O.Praem., telegraphed Father Michael McKeough, O.Praem., who was in Montana. In the telegraph, Abbot Pennings appointed Father McKeough the first headmaster of Archmere Academy.

Father McKeough telegraphed Abbot Pennings that same day with his response, “Will do as you say. Sounds great.”

The following day, Abbot Pennings wrote to Bishop Edmond Fitzmaurice of Wilmington, seeking the bishop’s approval of the plan to open Archmere Academy. The school opened its doors in September of 1932 with a student enrollment of 22.

Today is the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus says to Peter, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.”

On this special day in Archmere’s history, may we remember Father McKeough – the rock upon which Archmere was built.
