Whoever sows bountifully will reap bountifully. God loves a cheerful giver.

On August 10, 1893, Abbot Augustine Bazelmans, O.Praem., of Berne Abbey in Holland agreed with the unanimous consent of his Council to send Norbertines to work in the Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Father Bernard Pennings, O.Praem., and two other Norbertines left Holland on November 1, 1893, and they were soon followed by an additional 23 Norbertines.
Berne Abbey was founded on August 3, 1134, and still exists today.
On August 10, 258, Deacon Lawrence was martyred in Rome for his reverence for and service to the poor. In the first reading for today’s Mass, Saint Paul writes, “Whoever sows bountifully will reap bountifully. God loves a cheerful giver.”
Saint Lawrence was a bountiful and cheerful giver, as were the Norbertine missionaries from Holland.
Abbot Pennings eventually founded Archmere Academy in 1932.
