SS. Adrian Jansen and James Lacops

On July 9, 1572, Norbertine Fathers Adrian Jansen and James Lacops were hanged in Holland for their loyalty to the Catholic faith. They were among 19 other priests, referred to as the Martyrs of Gorkum, who were killed that day. Both men were members of the Abbey of Middelburg in Holland.

Adrian had joined the community at age 15. He was the pastor of the parish, and James was his assistant. Adrian was 43 and James, 30, at the time of their deaths. They were beatified on November 24, 1675, and later canonized on June 29, 1877.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the newly sent twelve Apostles: “As you go make this proclamation: ‘The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.'”

Fathers Adrian and James made that proclamation with their lives and deaths.
