Pope Francis

On March 13, 2013 Pope Francis was elected pope on the 5th ballot, the first pope to choose the name “Francis.” He was born in 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina; he joined the Jesuits in 1958, was ordained priest in 1969, and was ordained bishop in 1992. His motto as bishop was “lowly but chosen” (cf. Matthew 9:9-13), a motto he has kept as pope.

In his homily today during a Penance Service at Saint Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis announced a year of jubilee dedicated to the mercy of God, from December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016, calling Jesus “the living face of the Father’s mercy.”  On this “Friday the 13th” we thank God for Pope Francis who is also “the living face of the Father’s mercy.”
