On This Date…

On August 6, 1932, the Wilmington newspapers carried the first report about a new high school – Archmere Academy; school opened on September 14th.

On August 6, 1945, the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan; 75,000 people died instantly and another 65,000 died in the following months from injuries and radiation sickness.

On August 6, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law; it prohibited voter discrimination.

On August 6, 1978, Pope Paul VI died in Rome at age 80; he was the first pope to visit the United States, begging the United Nations General Assembly in December 1965, “No more war. War never again.”

On this Feast of the Transfiguration, established on August 6, 1457, we heard at Mass these words of God about Jesus: “This is my beloved Son; listen to Him”. He will also listen to us as we pray for peace, racial harmony, and an end to war.
