We Are Servants

Today’s Word:

“The greatest among you must be your servant” (Matthew 23:11)

On This Date…

On August 28, 430, Saint Augustine died in North Africa at age 75; he wrote the Rule by which Norbertines live. He wrote in his “Confessions“, published in 397, “Our hearts are restless, Lord, and they will never rest until they rest in You.”

On August 28, 1784, Father Junipero Serra died in Carmel, California at age 69; he became a Franciscan at age 17, and founded nine missions in California from San Diego to San Francisco, a distance of 514 miles. Pope Francis will canonize Father Serra in Washington, DC on September 23, 2015.

On August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I have a dream” speech to a multi-racial audience in Washington, DC; many wept openly as Dr. King spoke of a time when the evils of prejudice and segregation would vanish.

At Mass today at Daylesford Abbey, during the Solemn Profession of Frater James Garvey, O.Praem., we heard these words of Jesus: “The greatest among you must be your servant”. Saint Augustine, Father Serra, and Dr. King were great in their service.
