On November 8, 1959 Bishop Michael Hyle of Wilmington dedicated Saint Norbert Hall; in attendance were the governor and senator of Delaware, Abbot Sylvester Killeen, O.Praem of Saint Norbert Abbey in Wisconsin and Father Michael McKeough, O.Praem., Archmere’s first headmaster (1932-1936), who gave the dedication address. As you know, Saint Norbert Hall is now undergoing major reconstruction, and that, too, will be dedicated.

On November 9, 324 the Church of Saint John Lateran, Rome’s cathedral, was dedicated; it was the site of five ecumenical councils and was the pope’s residence before the Vatican.

At Mass today we hear these words: “the temple of God, which you are, is holy”, inspiring for a dedication anniversary and for a school community.

The Lateran Basilica

ONovember 9, 324 AD Pope Saint Sylvester dedicated the Lateran Basilica in Rome; it remains to today as the pope’s cathedral church, and was his residence until 1309. It was a gift to the Church from Emperor Constantine  just before Christianity became a legal religion in 313 AD.

On November 8, 1959, a Sunday, Bishop Michael Hyle of Wilmington dedicated Saint Norbert Hall, which contains the Archmere Oratory, dedicated in 2014.

ONovember 9, 1989 the Berlin Wall fell, ending the Cold War, and leading to the reunification of East and West Germany. Today, Germans are gathering at the Brandenburg Gate for a performance of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.”

AMass today we heard these words of Saint Paul: “You are God’s building. … The temple of God, which you are, is holy”. That is reason for us to be people of joy and hope.

After blessing the cornerstone on the outside wall of the current Oratory (the library in 1959), there was a ceremony on the front steps of Saint Norbert Hall. Then, the guests proceeded into the new auditorium (our current library) for Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and a dedication address given by Father Michael McKeough, O.Praem., Archmere’s first headmaster from 1932 to 1936. Among the guests were Abbot Sylvester Killeen, O.Praem. of Saint Norbert Abbey in Wisconsin; Honorable J. Caleb Boggs, Governor of Delaware; and Honorable John. J. Williams, U.S. Senator for Delaware.

Today, Archmere’s varisty football team gathered in the Oratory for their weekly team Mass. They heard these words of Saint Paul, “I myself am convinced about you …that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge.” We are thankful for all the goodness and knowledge given and received in Saint Norbert Hall these 54 years.
