Pope Francis Governs The Church With Wisdom

Today’s Word:

O Wisdom, you came forth from the mouth of the Most High and, reaching from beginning to end, you ordered all things mightily and sweetly. Come, and teach us the way of prudence. (Ecclesiasticus 24:3, Wisdom 8:1)

On December 17, 1936, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, S.J., was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Italian immigrant parents. He was the oldest of five children. He attended a vocational school and studied chemistry in college. After college, he entered the Jesuit Order and was ordained a priest on December 3, 1969. He was serving as archbishop of Buenos Aires when he was elected on March 13, 2013, as the 266th pope, taking the name “Francis” in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi (1182-1226).

In this week’s Time Magazine, Nancy Gibbs wrote, “For committing the world’s largest church to confronting its deepest issues and for balancing judgement with mercy, Pope Francis is Time’s 2013 Person of the Year.” Pope Francis said, “We should appear as joyful messengers of challenging proposals, guardians of the goodness and beauty which shine forth in a life of fidelity to the Gospel.”

In the words of today’s antiphon, O Wisdom, Pope Francis governs the church with “strong and yet tender care.”
