“Inspired by its heritage, Archmere cultivates empathetic leaders – young men and women prepared for every good work.”
– Archmere Academy Mission Statement
On This Date…
On March 4, 1933 the faculty and students of Archmere (all 22) attended the inauguration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in Washington, DC. President Roosevelt was a Democrat. Mr. John J. Raskob, who sold Archmere to the Norbertines in 1932, was Chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1928 to 1932.
As Archmere’s Mission Statement states, “Inspired by its heritage, Archmere cultivates empathetic leaders – young men and women prepared for every good work.”
“The earth has yielded its fruits; God, our God has blessed us” (Psalm 67:7)
John J. and Helena S. Raskob
On This Date…
On August 1, 1910 John and Helena Raskob moved from their home in Wilmington to their new home at Archmere, along with their first four children: John (3), William (2), Helena (1), and Elizabeth (6 weeks). Nine more children were born at Archmere. Of the 13, only one still is living.
In 1921 Mrs. Raskob wrote a book about the planning and construction of The Patio, completed in 1918. In part she wrote, “Archmere is now a beautiful dream come true. But the greatest charm, aside from the voices of the children, is the homelike spirit which has been fostered in these walls.” Archmere’s Class of 2019 is receiving this M&H message for the first time.
Today at Mass we prayed, “The earth has yielded its fruits; God, our God has blessed us”. May God bless the Raskobs, the new Class of 2019, and the Class of 2015 now leaving for college.
On August 15, 1967, Cardinal John Krol, Archbishop of Philadelphia, dedicated the Church of the Assumption at Daylesford Abbey. Archmere Kairos retreatants assemble in the abbey church several times during each Kairos retreat.
On August 15, 2013 – today – over 200 athletes, coaches, and parents assembled in Archmere’s theatre to celebrate Mass for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven. We do not know the actual date of her death (or her “falling asleep”), but we observe it today.
Mr. John Jordan ’80
Before Mass, Principal Mr. John Jordan ’80 welcomed us, especially the transfer students and the incoming members of the Class of 2017. Mr. Jordan also introduced Archmere’s new Campus Minister, Mr. William Gabriel.
In today’s Gospel, Elizabeth says to her cousin Mary, “At the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.”
As we near the start of a new school year, may what we say to each other cause joy.
