At the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. (Luke 1:44)

On August 15, 1914, the Panama Canal opened, providing a short shipping route of 48 miles between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The cost was great in terms of dollars and human lives; over 5,600 workers died building the canal. Over 1 million vessels have passed through the canal.

On August 15, 1932, Father Michael McKeough, O.Praem., Archmere’s first headmaster, met with Mr. John Raskob in his Wilmington office concerning the first payment due to him for the purchase of Archmere.

On August 15, 1967, Cardinal John Krol, Archbishop of Philadelphia, dedicated the Church of the Assumption at Daylesford Abbey. The Norbertines of Daylesford continue to sponsor Archmere Academy.

On August 15, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption, marking the moment when Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was taken body and soul to heaven. Today is a holy day of obligation, and about 300 athletes, coaches, and parents gathered in Archmere’s theater for Mass.

In today’s Gospel, Elizabeth said to her cousin, Mary of Nazareth, “At the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.” May what we say to each other this year cause joy, a canal opening up all sorts of relationships in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and between friends.
