Salt of the Earth

Saint Augustine

Saint Augustine

Today’s Word:

“The salt of the earth and the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13-14)

On This Date…

On August 28, 430AD Saint Augustine died in North Africa at age 75; in his Rule, followed by Norbertines, he asks us “to be of one mind and one heart on the way to God,” words that begin the Archmere Prayer.

On August 28, 1784 Father Junipero Serra died in Carmel, California at age 69; he became a Franciscan at age 17, and founded nine missions in California from San Diego to San Francisco, a distance of 514 miles.
On August 28, 1963 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I have a dream” speech to a multi-racial audience in Washington, DC, speaking of a time when the evils of prejudice and segregation would vanish.
In today’s Gospel Jesus called His disciples to be “the salt of the earth and the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13-14). Saint Augustine, Father Serra, and Dr. King were salt and light for our world, as is Father John Zagarella, O.Praem. whose birthday is today.
