Keeping the Faith

Today’s Word:

“I have competed well, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7)

Vincent J. Filliben ’47

On This Date…

Today in Archmere’s Theatre was the Funeral Mass for Vincent James Filliben, ’47, a teacher and coach at Archmere from 1954 to 1992. The basketball/volleyball court in The Moglia Fieldhouse was dedicated to Vince on January 30, 2010. Vince played football, basketball, and baseball at Archmere, coached all three at Archmere, and was Athletic Director. He was an altar server and Vice President of his senior class.

Last evening the Viewing for Vince was held in The Patio where Vince attended classes from 1943 to 1947. Three of Vince’s children attended Archmere: Vincent ’78, Anne ’84, and Sean ’86. Every year an Archmere senior receives an athletic award named for Vince’s son, Mark, who died in 1965. Three of Vince’s brothers also attended Archmere.

Concelebrating with me today were two Archmere alumni who are priests of the Diocese of Wilmington: Father John Hynes ’57 and Father Anthony Pileggi ’87. Vince coached Father Hynes.

On the cover of the Mass booklet today were these words of Saint Paul to his younger disciple, Timothy: “I have competed well, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”. As Vince did, so may we compete well and keep the faith.
