“Lord, make me a channel of your peace, where there is hatred let me bring your love.” (Prayer of St. Francis)
On This Date…
Today is the Jewish Feast of Yom Kippur, ten days after Rosh Hashanah. On this day Jews repent, pray, and fast to bring about reconciliation between people, and between individuals and God. The fasting is required for all women 12 and over and all men 13 and over; the fast ends at nightfall tonight. In Israel there is no air or rail travel, no radio or television broadcast.
Today is the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, who died at 7:00 PM on the evening of October 3, 1226, at age 44; on October 4, 1226, he was buried in the Church of Saint George in Assisi, Italy. Before he died he gave to each one present a piece of bread as a sign of mutual peace.
On this day, we can pray with Saint Francis, “Lord, make me a channel of your peace, where there is hatred let me bring your love” – a perfect prayer on Yom Kippur.
