On This Date…

On April 15, 1134, Easter Sunday, Saint Norbert celebrated his last Mass; he died of illness on June 6 at age 54.

On April 15, 1865, Holy Saturday, President Abraham Lincoln died at age 56; he had begun his 2nd term 41 days earlier, and placed on coins “In God We Trust.”

On April 15, 1889, Monday of Holy Week, Father Damian DeVeuster died of leprosy at Molokai, Hawaii at age 49, after serving the lepers for 16 years; he was canonized in 2009.

On April 15, 1912 The Titanic sunk after hitting an iceberg; the last music to be played on board was the hymn, “nearer My God to Thee!”

On April 15, 1947 Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier.

On April 15, 2013 there was a bombing at the Boston Marathon, killing 3 and injuring 250.

On April 15, 2017 we hear these words of Jesus in tonight’s Gospel: “Do not be afraid”. We trust God who is near, without fear.

On April 15, 1865, Holy Saturday, President Abraham Lincoln died from a gunshot wound at age 56; he was called “a great martyr to liberty.”

On April 15, 1889, Monday of Holy Week, Father Damian DeVeuster died at Molokai, Hawaii, of leprosy at age 49; he had served the lepers for 16 years, always addressing them as “we lepers.”

Saint Norbert, President Lincoln, and Father Damian took to heart Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel: “The one who feeds on me will have life because of me”.
