On October 2, 1932 Archmere played its first football game, against Saint James High School, Penns Grove, New Jersey; Archmere lost 12-0. In 1982 Archmere defeated Saint James High School 28-10 – a second-half comeback win; Dr. William Doyle was varsity coach. Saint James High School closed in June 1983.

At sundown this evening the Jewish People begin the celebration of Rosh Hashanah, the first day of the Jewish New Year 5777; the ten-day celebration will conclude on October 12th, Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

With the Jewish people we say, “Come let us sing joyfully to the Lord, let us acclaim the Rock of our salvation”, today’s responsorial psalm at Mass.

On October 2, 1932, Archmere played its first football game against Saint James High School, Penns Grove, New Jersey. Archmere lost 12-0.

In the fall of 1982 Archmere defeated Saint James High School 28-10. Dr. William Doyle was coaching that day and among the members of the team were Mike Udovich, John Sullivan, Dave Mengers, Ken Falkenstein, and Pat Udovich, who all have children at Archmere this year. The 1983 yearbook has this note: “a second-half comeback versus Saint James was worth the ride to Carney’s Point.” Archmere ended its season 12-0 and State Champions – a “golden jubilee” of Archmere football.

On October 2nd is the Feast of the Guardian Angels.  As Mr. Gabriel prayed this morning, so we can pray, “Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light, to guard, to rule, and guide.” Amen.
