The Will of God

Today’s Word:

“Be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect” (Romans 12:2)

On August 27, 387, Saint Monica died in Ostia, the seaport of Rome, at age 65, after an illness of nine days. She had two sons and a daughter. Saint Augustine was her oldest child, and she had prayed for his conversion since he was 16 years old. Augustine was baptized at age 32 on April 24, 387, along with his own 16 year old son, Adeodatus, in the presence of his mother. Both Augustine and Adeodatus were with Monica when she died, and both were “overwhelmed with grief.”

On August 27, 1910, Mother Teresa of India was born in Yugoslavia. She entered the convent in Ireland at age 18, and that same year went as a missionary to India. She first taught high school and later became principal of a girls’ academy. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 and died in 1997.

In the Student Life Center this morning, Archmere’s faculty and staff heard these words of Scripture: “Be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect”. Saint Monica and Saint Mother Teresa were transformed and discerned the will of God – one as a wife and mother and one as a nun and missionary.

Saint Monica’s last words to Augustine were, “Nothing is far from God,” words Mr. Gabriel posted today on the Oratory screen. Through the lives of Saint Monica and Mother Teresa we know that “nothing is far from God.”

On April 24, 387, Easter Sunday, Saint Augustine was baptized in Milan, Italy at age 32. Baptized along with him was his 15 year old son Adeodatus and his best friend Alypius.

After Baptism, they made their First Communion in the company of Augustine’s mother Saint Monica, who had prayed for Augustine’s intellectual and moral conversion since he was a teenager.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus appeared to the disciples on Easter night in the Upper Room and said, “Peace be with you.” Augustine received that peace on the day of his conversion.
