On This Date…

On November 30, 1884 Mrs. Helena Green Raskob was born in Maryland; she married John Raskob in 1906 and they moved to Archmere in 1910 with their oldest four children; nine more children were born at Archmere.

On November 30, 1983 Father Robert Sromovsky, O.Praem. died In DePere, Wisconsin at age 78; he taught music at Archmere from 1934 to 1937 and composed Archmere’s first school song.

On November 30, 1988 Father Neal McLaughlin, O.Praem. died in DePere at age 70; he began as a freshman at Archmere on September 14, 1932 and later taught at Archmere from 1945 to 1947.

November 30 is the Feast of Saint Andrew, a fisherman along with his brother, Simon Peter, and both were fishing partners with James and John. Jesus said to them, “Come after me and I will make you fishers of men (and women)”. We marvel at their quick and generous response.

Do You Love Me?

“Do you love me? Feed/tend lambs/sheep” (John 21:15-17)

UnknownOn May 13, 1917 the Blessed Mother appeared to three children (ages 10, 9, 7) at Fatima, Portugal; she appeared a total of 6 times in 5 months, asking the children to pray for conversion, repentance, and world peace.

On May 13, 1963 Father Michael McLaughlin, O.Praem., Archmere Class of 1938, died of cancer at age 42; he was the first member of Daylesford to die and is buried at Daylesford Abbey. He had taught math at Bishop Neumann High School in Philadelphia.

On May 13, 1981 Pope John Paul II was shot in Saint Peter’s Square in Rome; after he recovered the pope met with the gunman, forgave him, and made peace.

On May 13, 2000 Pope John Paul II went to Fatima to beatify two of the children to whom the Blessed Mother appeared in 1917: Francisco who died in 1919 at age 11 and Jacinta who died in 1920 at age 10.

In today’s Gospel on “Friday the 13th,” Jesus asks Simon Peter 3 times, “Do you love me? Feed/tend lambs/sheep” (John 21:15-17). The 3 Fatima children, Father Michael McLaughlin, and Pope John Paul II – all did as Jesus asked.
