Giving Thanks to God

On This Date…

On November 25, 1893, Father Bernard Pennings, O.Praem., the founder of Archmere, arrived at his first American mission, Our Lady of the Snows Parish in Delwiche, Wisconsin, with a fellow missionary; It had snowed two days before so Father Pennings arrived by sleigh. It was a Saturday. The bulk of their luggage was on a ship frozen on the ice in the river in Green Bay.

Father Pennings wrote home to Holland that day, “I believe that everything will work out in the end, but we’ll need the patience of Job.” Earlier in the letter he wrote, “Once again, and especially now, we thank God who is perfectly good.” Those are the sentiments which Father Zagarella expressed to us this morning at our Thanksgiving Liturgy. So, with Father Pennings and Father Zagarella we say, “Once again, and especially now, we thank God who is perfectly good.”
