On This Date…
On January 31, 1915 Thomas Merton was born in Prades, France. He enrolled in Columbia University in New York in January 1935, graduating with a BA in English in 1938 and a MA in 1939. On November 16, 1938 he was baptized a Catholic and received First Communion. In the fall of 1940 he began teaching English at Saint Bonaventure College in Olean, NY.
On December 10, 1941 Merton entered the Trappist Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky where he was ordained a priest in 1949. During his years in the monastery he wrote more than 70 books, including his autobiography, “The Seven Storey Mountain.” He died suddenly on December 10, 1968 in Bangkok, Thailand and is buried in Kentucky.
In today’s Gospel Jesus asked his disciples during a storm, “Why are you terrified?” (Mark 4:40). In our fears we can pray with Thomas Merton, “I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone”.
