On March 19, 1955, the Feast of Saint Joseph, Abbot Bernard Pennings, O.Praem., founder of Archmere, was buried in De Pere, Wisconsin. The date of his burial was significant because he served as pastor of Saint Joseph Church in De Pere from 1900 until 1955.

Abbot Pennings used to lay on the cold floor of Saint Joseph Church at night, begging Saint Joseph to intercede for the new and small Norbertine community in America. When he was later credited with many successes, he responded, “All this is the work of Saint Joseph.”

On March 19, 2013, Pope Francis was inaugurated as the 266th pope. In his homily that day, he called on all people to protect children, the elderly, and those in need, citing Saint Joseph’s care of the Holy Family.

In Today’s Gospel, we hear, “When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife Mary into his home.” Like Saint Joseph, we care for the members of our immediate family.
